To realise our mission, we have transformed what we do. Learning at Hallam is about acquiring knowledge and putting it into practice: knowledge applied. Every course is underpinned by the principles of the Hallam Model: ‘engage, challenge, collaborate, thrive’. Every student has a ‘triangle’ of dedicated support: an academic adviser, an employability adviser and a welfare adviser. Every course connects directly to employers and the community, with digital technologies embedded, and we do this through different approaches to learning from conventional lectures and seminars to digital platforms, placements, studio work and field trips.
The ‘Hallam model’ is a genuinely distinctive approach that gives students the opportunities and support they need to put the knowledge they learn into practice, preparing them for their future career. Our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging with the world, collaborating with others, challenging students to think in new ways, and providing a structure and environment in which they can thrive.
The success of our applied teaching approach is being recognised. We have won awards for employability and graduate prospects, for entrepreneurship and for widening access to university.
Our strategic focus for teaching is now on developing future-looking curricula that meet the needs of our students, as well as industry, employers and professional bodies. We need our provision to be both attractive to applicants, and financially and educationally viable. This is being delivered through an ambitious programme of redevelopment of our portfolio.
